CHATGPT ADS: ARE THEY WORTH IT?

In short: ChatGPT ads are live, and any US business can sign up. They’re cheap to test because few businesses are on there yet. They’re also new, the local targeting is weak, and nobody has years of data. Test them with a small budget. Don’t pull money out of what already books you jobs.
A year ago, people searched “chatgpt ads” about 4,400 times a month in the US. In September 2026 it was 27,100. Searches for “chatgpt ads manager” went from almost zero to 4,400. Owners want to know one thing: should I be on there?
Here’s how ChatGPT advertising works, what it costs, and what to do with your money.
What are ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are small ads that show up under ChatGPT’s answer. They’re marked as ads. They sit apart from the answer, so you can tell which is which.
So what do ChatGPT ads look like? Each one has:
- the business name and its little logo
- a short headline
- one line of text
- sometimes a picture
- a link to the business’s website
The ad matches what the person is talking about. Ask ChatGPT how to fix a leaky water heater, and an ad for a water heater company shows up under the answer.
Why does ChatGPT have ads now?
ChatGPT costs a ton of money to run, and most people use it for free. Ads pay for that. Google and Facebook made the same deal years ago.
OpenAI started testing ads in the US in January 2026. TechCrunch covered it the day it was announced.

Here’s how it works:
- Who sees ads in ChatGPT: People on the Free plan and the cheap Go plan. People who pay for Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise don’t see them.
- Where: At the bottom of the answer.
- Kids: No ads for anyone under 18.
- The answer stays the same: The ad doesn’t change what ChatGPT tells people.
- Chats stay private: Advertisers never see anyone’s chats or personal data.
So does ChatGPT have ads? Yes. And that’s a lot of people. Most ChatGPT users are on the free plan.
How do ChatGPT ads work?
This is the big change from Google Ads. On Google, you pick keywords. You pay when someone searches those words.
ChatGPT doesn’t work like that. It looks at the whole chat. Then it decides if your ad fits. You describe the topics you want to show up for. ChatGPT also reads your ad and your website. Then it picks where and when your ad shows.
That means two things:
- You have less control. You can’t pick exact words like you can on Google.
- Your website matters more. If your page is clear about what you do and where you do it, ChatGPT knows who to show your ad to.
You track what happens after the click with a small piece of code on your site, called a pixel. You get totals, like clicks and sales. You never see anyone’s chat.
How to advertise on ChatGPT
OpenAI opened the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager to US businesses in May 2026. Digiday has the details. Before that, you needed a big budget and a deal with OpenAI. Now advertising on ChatGPT is self-serve, so a small business can sign up and run its own ads.

Here’s how to run ads on ChatGPT, step by step:
- Sign up for Ads Manager. Use your business name and website. OpenAI checks your business before ads go live.
- Check your category. Only some kinds of businesses are allowed so far. Local services, travel, education and stores are in. Dating and gambling are out. Health, money and legal ads have extra rules.
- Put the pixel on your site. Do this before you spend a dollar. If you can’t see sales or booked calls, you can’t tell if it works.
- Pick one service to test. Not your whole business. One service, one page.
- Describe the chats you want. Write out the topics and questions your buyers ask. Think “how much does a new roof cost” or “best way to fix a slab leak.”
- Write the ad. Keep it short. Say what you do and why someone should click.
- Set a small budget and a bid. Start low. You can always add more.
- Check it every week. Look at clicks, calls, forms and sales. Cut what doesn’t work.
What do ChatGPT ads cost?
You set your own budget. The minimum is $25 a day per campaign, about $750 a month. The early test asked for $50,000. That went away in May.
You can pay two ways:
| How you pay | What it means | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Per click (CPC) | You pay when someone clicks your ad. | Getting people to your website. |
| Per 1,000 views (CPM) | You pay each time 1,000 people see your ad. | Getting your name out there. |
Here’s the ChatGPT ads pricing to start with. Bid $3 to $5 a click. If you pay per view, the starting bid is $60 for 1,000 views. The price goes up as more businesses join.
For a small business, pay per click. You only pay when someone shows up at your website. Paying per view is for big brands with big budgets.
Are ChatGPT ads worth it?
The good part. It’s early. Most of your competitors aren’t on there yet. Fewer people bidding means cheaper clicks. And people who ask ChatGPT for help are close to buying. They’re asking real questions, like “who should I call to fix my AC?”
The bad part. It’s new. The local targeting is weak right now, so a plumber in one town pays for clicks from people three states away. You get less control than Google Ads. And nobody has years of data to tell you what a good result looks like.
So here’s who should test ChatGPT ads for small business now, and who should wait.
| Test it now | Wait, or test small |
|---|---|
| Online stores that ship anywhere | Service businesses that only work in one town |
| Businesses that sell across the country | Anyone without a pixel or call tracking set up |
| Services people research for weeks first | Anyone whose Google Ads aren’t working yet |
| Owners with money they can afford to lose | Owners who need every dollar to book a job this month |
If you only serve one town, get your Google Ads and local SEO working first. Those already show your business to people near you who need you today. Then test ChatGPT ads with a small amount on the side.
How to stop seeing ChatGPT ads
If you’re a user and not an advertiser, you have three choices:
- Pay for a plan. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise don’t show ads.
- Close the ad. You can hide an ad and see why you got it.
- Turn off personalization. In your settings, you can stop ChatGPT from using your past chats to pick ads.
Mistakes to avoid
- Moving your whole Google Ads budget. Don’t take money from something that books jobs to test something new.
- Running ads with no tracking. Clicks aren’t customers. Count calls, forms and sales.
- Sending clicks to your home page. Send them to the page for the one service you’re selling.
- Judging it in a week. Give a test a few weeks and enough clicks to learn something.
- Paying for views. For a small business, pay per click.
ChatGPT ads vs showing up in ChatGPT for free
These are two different things. ChatGPT ads are paid. You pay, and you get a spot under the answer. Showing up inside the answer itself is free. That comes from your reviews, your website, and what other sites say about you.
Do both. The free part is slow but lasts. The paid part is fast but stops when you stop paying. We wrote about the free part in How to Get ChatGPT and Google AI to Recommend Your Business. If you want it done for you, look at our AI search optimization.
