In short: A plain guide for home service owners. See if AI already sends you visitors, then fix the free listings and site facts that get you recommended.

More people ask ChatGPT for a plumber now. Google shows AI answers at the top of the page. If AI does not know your business, it will not say your name. Here is how to check where you stand, and what to fix.

Check your AI visitors

Google Analytics has a new channel for AI visits. Google Analytics is the free tool that tracks your site visitors. Here is how to find it.

Google Analytics overview page
  1. Open Google Analytics.
  2. Click Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic Acquisition.
  3. Make sure the dropdown says Default Channel Group.
  4. Look for a row called AI Assistant.

That row is every visitor from ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. If you are in there, that is a good sign.

Now find out which pages AI is quoting.

  1. In the same report, change the dropdown to Session source / medium.
  2. Type chatgpt.com in the search box.
  3. Then click Engagement, then Pages and screens.
  4. Add a filter. Session source, contains, chatgpt.

Those pages are the ones AI trusts. They are your most valuable pages. Make them better before you build anything new.

Check Bing too

Bing Webmaster Tools is a free report from Bing. It has an AI performance report that Google does not have.

Bing Webmaster Tools page
  1. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools.
  2. Sign in with your Google account.
  3. Click Import and pull your site from Google Search Console.
  4. Open AI Performance.
Google Search Console home page

You will see how many times AI cited you. You will see the searches you showed up for. And you will see which pages got recommended.

Claim the free listings AI reads

ChatGPT pulls business data from Bing. Not Google. So if you only have a Google Business Profile, ChatGPT is guessing. These five listings are free and most El Paso companies never claim them.

Google Business Profile sign-in page
  • Bing Places. This is the big one for ChatGPT.
  • Apple Maps. Tons of iPhone users search here. Go to Apple Business and claim it.
  • Yelp. I know. But it still drives calls, and Apple Maps pulls most of its data from Yelp.
  • Better Business Bureau. People think it costs money. A basic listing is free, and AI treats it as a trust signal.
  • Nextdoor. People ask neighbors for a plumber there. Set up a page so you show up.

Match your name, phone, and address on all of them.

Add original facts

Most companies dump ChatGPT blog posts on their site. AI can tell. It has read that same post a million times. The one thing you can add that nobody can copy is your own data.

  • Years in business.
  • Homeowners served or jobs done.
  • Your Google review count. Copy the number from your Business Profile. Add a line to your home page.
  • A real stat from your work. Say you inspect roofs in El Paso. Out of the last 100 roofs you looked at, how many needed a full replacement? Put that number on the page.
  • Why you got into this trade.

If you do not know what to write, let AI pull it out of you. Copy everything on one service page. Paste it into ChatGPT or Claude. Ask it to interview you about that service. Answer the questions out loud and honestly. Then put the facts it finds on that page. We do this on our own site, and it works.

Answer real questions people ask

AI answers questions. So your site needs to answer questions too.

  1. Go to AnswerThePublic and type in your service.
  2. Pick a question real people ask. Something like “how long does a water heater last in El Paso.”
  3. Write a short article that answers it.
  4. Put a two or three sentence summary at the top.

That summary is what AI grabs. One honest answer beats ten pages of filler.

What works best

Say your goal is to get AI to recommend you. Here is how I rank the options.

  • Worst. Spamming AI written pages about every topic you can think of. It can hurt you.
  • Better. Getting listed on Yelp and Bing. Cheap, fast, and it gives AI real data.
  • Best. Getting mentioned on sites AI already trusts. Local news, trade groups, supplier pages, chamber sites. One real mention beats fifty of your own pages.

Optional, make the writing sound like you

This one is extra. If you use Claude, you can teach it your voice.

  1. Open a new chat in Claude.
  2. Click the plus button, then Skills, then Manage skills.
  3. Click Add, then Create a skill.
  4. Paste in things you have written. Old emails, past blog posts, texts to customers.

Now when you write a page, it sounds like you and not a robot. Have it interview you first, then write. Your content ends up unique, and unique is what AI wants.

Where to start

Do the Google Analytics check today. Claim Bing Places this week. Then add three real numbers to your home page. That is a month of work for most owners. Want to hand it off? Look at our SEO services and Local SEO services. Or book a strategy call and we will walk through your numbers.

We can do this for you

You can do everything above yourself. Most owners do not have the hours. Dead River Management builds and runs it for home service businesses. We work in El Paso and across the country. You keep running jobs. We handle the search and AI visibility work. You judge us on booked jobs, not reports. See SEO services, read about the Demand Flow guarantee, or book a strategy call.

Questions

How do I know if ChatGPT sends me visitors?

Open Google Analytics and go to Traffic Acquisition. Look for the AI Assistant channel. It shows visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

Why does Bing matter if nobody uses it?

ChatGPT pulls business data from Bing. If you are not on Bing Places, ChatGPT has less to work with. The listing is free.

Should I post a lot of AI written blogs?

No. That is the worst approach. Short answers to real questions, with original facts, work far better.
