GOOGLE AI MODE FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

In short: Google AI Mode answers a question in full sentences. It names a few businesses. For home repair, it can even call a business for the customer. You don’t need special code for it. You need a clear page for each job. You need a full Google listing. And you need a phone that gets answered.
Google searches for “ai mode” hit 6,120,000 in the U.S. in September 2026. The average for the last 12 months was 2,740,000 a month. The last three months ran about 1.7 times that. Another 368,000 people a month search “google ai mode”. Your customers use it. Here’s what it means for a roofer, plumber, HVAC company or auto repair shop.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s most powerful AI search. You type a full question. You get a written answer and links. Then you get a box to ask the next question. People find it at google.com/ai. Or they search on Google and tap AI Mode under the search bar.
It isn’t the same as AI Overviews. An AI Overview is the short AI answer at the top of a normal search. AI Mode is a whole back-and-forth chat. I/O is Google’s big yearly event. At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, Google let people ask one more question from an AI Overview. That takes them into AI Mode. AI Mode passed one billion users a month.

Here’s how it looks for a customer whose AC is broken.
| Regular Google search | Google AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| What they type | “ac repair el paso” | “My AC is blowing warm air and it’s 104 out. Who on the Eastside can come today, and what will it cost?” |
| What they get | A map with three shops, then a list of links | A written answer, a few shops, and links |
| What they do next | Call one of the three | Ask one more question, or have Google call for them |
Google can now call businesses for the customer
This is the part most owners haven’t heard yet.
In that same post, Google wrote: “for select categories like home repair, beauty or pet care, you can ask Google to call businesses on your behalf.” It’s rolling out across the U.S. Google also showed booking for local services right in Search. It shows prices and open times. Then a link sends people to the business to finish booking.
Plan for the simple version. Someone, or something, calls. It asks if you do the job, when you can come, and about what it costs. If nobody picks up, the customer moves on to the next name. Missed calls already cost you jobs. Now a missed call also knocks you out of an AI search.

How does AI Mode pick which businesses to show?
AI Mode runs lots of small searches on parts of a question. Google lays it out in its guide to AI features in Search. Then it puts one answer together. Google calls this query fan-out. While it writes, it finds more pages to link.
So for a local job, one big question turns into many small ones. Who fixes AC on the Eastside? Who can come today? What does a fix cost? Who’s open now? Your website and your Google listing either answer those small questions or they don’t.
Here’s what you do not need. No extra steps. No special tricks. No special structured data. That’s code that labels your page for machines. To be a link, a page just has to be indexed. That means Google has it on file. It also has to show up in regular search with a short preview.
Someone selling you an “AI Mode package” built on secret code is selling you nothing.
What to do about AI Mode this month
Here are the steps, in order, for a service business.
- Fill out your Google Business Profile and keep it up to date. Pick the right categories. List every service and your service area. Show real hours and a phone number someone answers. If you have never cleaned it up, start with picking the right Google Business Profile categories.
- Give every service its own page, written in words. Put important info in text, not only in pictures. One page for water heater repair. One for drain cleaning. Each page says what you do, where, how fast, and what happens next. Those are the pages the small searches can find.
- Link your pages to each other. Link every service page from your home page and from your other service pages.
- Answer the phone, or have a plan when you can’t. Google calls for the customer now. A phone nobody answers is a lost job. Read what to text when you miss a call and why lead response time is the real cost.
- Keep reviews coming. Real reviews give AI answers something to say about you. Here’s how to get a review after every job.
If this list looks like plain good local SEO, that’s the point. AI Mode rewards the same basics, done well and kept fresh. Our guide on how to get ChatGPT and Google AI to recommend your business covers what AI reads before it recommends you, and what to fix.
How to tell if AI Mode is sending you work
Google counts AI visits in with your normal Search Console numbers, under Web. Search Console is Google’s free report on how your site shows up in search. You can’t see AI Mode visits on their own there.
So judge it by what pays the bills. Ask every new caller how they found you. Write it down. Track calls from your Google listing and booked jobs by where they came from. Say calls and booked jobs hold steady while website clicks drop. Then AI answers are sending people straight to your phone. That’s still a win.
What about Google’s new search agents?
Google also showed off new agents at I/O. They work in the background. They watch for news on a topic someone picks. They come first to Google AI Pro and Ultra users. Those are paid plans. Most of your customers don’t use them yet. Don’t spend money chasing them. Fix the basics above first. Every kind of Google search reads them.
We can do this for you
You can do all of this yourself. Most owners don’t have the time. We do this work for local service businesses. We work in El Paso and across the country.
- AI SEO services: we check what AI Mode, AI Overviews and ChatGPT say about your trade in your area. Then we fix the pages and listings they read.
- Local SEO: your Google Business Profile, service pages, reviews and the map pack. The map pack is the box of three businesses on the Google map.
- Google Local Services Ads: paid spots at the very top of Google for many home service trades.
You judge us on booked jobs, not reports. See what that looked like for Gonzalez & Sons Roofing. They went from about 2 to 8 roofs a month.
