In short: Your primary category is the biggest ranking setting on your Google Business Profile. Here is how to check it and see what the top competitors use.
Your map listing is your front door. That is true for every home service business in El Paso. Most owners set it up once and never look again. One setting on that profile matters more than all the rest.
What the profile is
A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Maps. It is the box with your name, reviews, hours, and phone number. Search “plumber near me” and the top three listings come from these profiles. That spot is called the map pack. If you are not in it, you are losing calls.
Why the primary category matters
Every profile has one primary category. You can add up to nine secondary ones. The primary category tells Google what your business is. Google uses it to decide which searches you show up for. It is the biggest ranking factor on the profile itself.
Say two El Paso roofers compete. One has Roofing Contractor as the primary. The other has Construction Company. The first one wins most of the time. Secondary categories help too. They let you show up for more searches.
How to check yours
- Search your business name on Google while signed in to your Google account.
- Click Edit profile.
- Find Business categories.
- Write down your primary category and each secondary category.
Now you know what you have. Next, find out what the winners have.
How to see what your competitors use
Google hides most of this from normal users. A free Chrome extension can show it. There are three free options.
Here is how it works with any of them.
- Go to the Chrome Store and install one of the extensions above.
- Open Google Maps and search a service you offer. Something like “AC repair El Paso.”
- Find a competitor ranking above you and click on them.
- Open the extension. It shows their primary and secondary categories.
- Compare their list to yours.
If their primary is different than yours, pay attention. That is the setting to fix first. Check the top three. If they all use the same primary and you don’t, change yours.
Add missing secondary categories
Look at the secondary categories the top three use. If they have one you don’t, add it. Only add categories you really do. An HVAC company should not add Plumber just because it is there. Go back to Edit profile, then Business categories, and add them. This takes about two minutes.
What PlePer shows that the others don’t
PlePer has one more useful screen. It shows which other platforms a competitor has claimed. Think Apple Maps, Bing Places, and Yelp. If they are on one you are not, go claim it. These listings are called citations. That just means other sites that show your name, address, and phone. They help Google trust that you are real.
Rating each profile feature
Here is my honest rating of each piece, out of 10.
- Reviews: 10. No argument here.
- Categories: 10. The most important setting on the profile.
- Services with descriptions: 8. The most underused part of the whole profile. Add every service you do. Give each one a description that names your area.
- Photos: 8. Steady, consistent pictures help a lot.
- Posts: 4. Overrated, but worth doing. Mention the areas you want to show up in.
- Attributes: 3. Low value, but fill them out for AI search just in case.
The honest part
Here is what most owners don’t want to hear. The profile is the easy part. Everything above takes an hour or two. If categories alone got you to number one, everyone would be number one.
What actually gets you to the top is the rest of your online presence. Your website. Mentions of your business on other sites. Your reviews. Other trust signals across the internet. The profile is the foundation, not the house.
So here is my warning. Don’t pay an agency hundreds a month just to “manage your map listing”. I have seen owners pay $500 a month for this. Some pay as much as $1,200. All they get is someone tweaking a profile that takes two hours to set up. I’m not knocking agencies. I run one. But that specific deal is a bad one.
Do the profile yourself this week. Then put your time and money into the stuff that actually moves the needle.
