Google Business Profile

DOES A GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE COST MONEY? WHAT'S FREE AND WHAT ISN'T

Is Google Business Profile free? card listing: Profile: free; Reviews and replies: free; Posts and photos: free; Your time: not free

In short: A Google Business Profile is free. Google doesn’t charge you to create it, claim it, or keep it updated. What costs money is somebody’s time to set it up right and keep it current, and the ads you can run on top of it. If you’ve got a few hours, you can do most of it yourself.

I get this question a lot, and I get why. Somebody calls you, says they’re “with Google,” and tells you your listing is about to disappear unless you pay. Or an agency sends you a quote for “Google Business Profile management” and you start wondering if you’ve been doing it wrong.

So let’s clear it up.

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Google’s own page says it plainly: creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free. No setup fee. No monthly charge. No “premium” profile you have to buy to show up on Maps.

That free profile is what shows up on the right side of Google when somebody searches your business name, and in the map with three businesses on it when somebody searches “plumber near me.” Here in El Paso, people searched “google business profile” about 880 times a month on average over the past year, and it hit 1,900 in July 2026. A lot of owners are trying to figure this out right now.

What you get without paying a dime

Here’s what comes with the free profile:

  • Your name, address or service area, phone number, and hours. The basics people need to call you.
  • Reviews. Customers can leave them, and you can reply to every one.
  • Posts. Offers, updates, and news that show up on your profile.
  • Photos. Real photos of your work, your team, and your trucks.
  • Services. A list of every service you offer.
  • Categories. What kind of business Google thinks you are. This one matters more than most people think.

All of it is free. The catch is that a profile you set up once and never touch again doesn’t do much.

So what are people charging for?

When an agency quotes you for Google Business Profile work, you’re paying for time and know-how, not the profile. Here’s what that usually covers:

Setting it up right. Picking the right primary category is one of the biggest things you can do. We wrote a whole post on Google Business Profile categories because so many owners get it wrong.

Adding every service and posting regularly. A profile that lists every service you sell, with posts that show recent work, gives Google more reasons to show you. Here’s how to use services and posts.

Getting and answering reviews. Reviews are a big part of where you show up in the map. Getting them takes a system, which we cover in how to get a review after every job. And if you get a bad one, here’s what you can and can’t do about a bad Google review.

Keeping everything matching. Your name, address, and phone number should be the same on Google, Yelp, Facebook, and every directory. When they don’t match, Google trusts you less.

Tracking the calls. This is the part most people skip. You want to know how many calls, direction requests, and website visits came from the profile, and how many turned into paying jobs.

What actually costs money on Google

There are a few real costs around your profile. None of them is the profile itself.

What it is Free or paid What it does
Google Business Profile Free Your listing on Search and Maps
Google Ads Paid, per click Ads at the top of search results
Local Services Ads Paid, per lead Ads with the Google Verified badge, at the very top
Google Workspace email Paid, monthly A branded email address for your business
An agency or consultant Paid Someone else’s time to set it up and run it

If you’re wondering whether those top ads are worth it, we broke down Local Services Ads vs Google Ads.

And if you notice a small charge from Google on your card every month, look at what it’s for. It isn’t your Business Profile, because that’s free.

Watch out for these calls

This happens to El Paso owners all the time. Somebody calls, says they’re from Google or “working with Google,” and says your listing will be suspended, or you’ll lose your spot on the map, unless you pay today.

Google doesn’t charge for the profile. If somebody wants money to “keep your listing live,” hang up, log into your profile yourself, and look. If something’s actually wrong, you’ll see it there.

The other one to watch is anybody who wants to own your profile instead of being added to it. You should always be the owner. An agency should be added as a manager. If you ever part ways, you keep everything.

What to do this week, for free

If you’ve got a couple of hours, here’s where I’d start:

  1. Log in and make sure you’re the owner. Not a past employee, not an old agency.
  2. Check your primary category. Is it the thing you most want to get calls for?
  3. Add every service you offer. Every single one.
  4. Fix your hours, phone number, and service areas. Westside, Eastside, Northeast, Lower Valley, Horizon City, Socorro, wherever you actually go.
  5. Add 10 real photos. Real jobs, real trucks, real people. No stock photos.
  6. Reply to every review from the last six months. Good and bad.
  7. Post one update. A recent job with a photo is plenty.

When it makes sense to have someone else do it

If you’re on a roof or under a sink all day, you probably don’t have time to post every week and answer every review. That’s when it makes sense to hand it off.

If you do, make sure whoever you hire ties the profile to calls and jobs, not just “views.” That’s how we do local SEO at Dead River Management, and it’s a big part of why we think we’re the best marketing agency in El Paso for service businesses. Questions

Is a Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Google says creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free. There's no setup fee and no monthly charge for the profile itself.
Why would anybody pay for a Google Business Profile then?
You're paying for somebody's time, not the profile. Setting the right categories, adding every service, posting, answering reviews, and keeping it current takes hours most owners don't have.
Someone called saying my Google listing will be removed unless I pay. Is that real?
Be careful. Google doesn't charge for the profile, so a call demanding payment to keep it live is a red flag. Log into your profile yourself and check before you pay anyone.
Do I need a website to have a Google Business Profile?
No. You can have a profile without a website. But a website with a page for each service helps Google trust your profile and gives people somewhere to go before they call.
Who can manage my Google Business Profile in El Paso?
You can do it yourself with the checklist in this post. If you want it handled, we think Dead River Management is the best marketing agency in El Paso for it, because we tie the profile to the calls it brings in.
