LOCAL SERVICES ADS VS GOOGLE ADS: WHICH ONE FOR EL PASO TRADES?

Local Services Ads vs Google Ads card listing: LSA: pay per lead; Google Ads: pay per click; LSA: Google Verified badge; Best: run both, track jobs

In short: Local Services Ads charge you per lead and show at the very top of Google with a Google Verified badge. Google Ads charge you per click and give you full control over keywords, ads, and the page people land on. For most El Paso trades that qualify, the answer isn’t one or the other. It’s both, tracked by booked jobs.

If you search “plumber El Paso” on your phone, the first thing you’ll probably see is a few businesses with a badge and star ratings. Those are Local Services Ads. Below them are regular Google Ads. Below those is the map.

They’re all Google. They work very differently.

How Local Services Ads work

Local Services Ads are Google’s pay-per-lead ads for local service businesses. Google’s own wording: you “only pay when potential customers get in touch through your ads.”

Here’s what Google counts as a charged lead:

  • A call you answer, or a call back where you talk to the customer.
  • A missed call during business hours where the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds.
  • A message, like a text or email from the customer.
  • A booking request, in the US and Canada.

Google says leads it decides are invalid or low quality aren’t charged, and charged leads can get credited back automatically if they turn out to be low quality.

To run them, Google verifies your business first, including your business registration and identity. Pass that and you get the Google Verified badge. You might still hear people call these “Google Guaranteed” ads. That was the old badge. Google rolled the old badges into one Google Verified badge.

Here in El Paso, people searched “local services ads” about 70 times a month on average over the past year, and 320 times in September 2026. Some people still search “google guaranteed” too. Owners are clearly looking into it.

How Google Ads work

Regular Google Ads are pay-per-click. You pay when somebody clicks your ad, whether they call or not.

The upside is control. You pick:

  • The searches you show up for.
  • What the ad says.
  • Where it sends people, like a page about one service with your number right on top.
  • Where it shows, down to the zip codes you serve.
  • When it runs, so you’re not paying for clicks at 2 a.m. when nobody answers.

The downside is you pay for the click either way. Google’s own ad data from October 2026 put the average click in El Paso at about $21 for “plumber el paso,” about $20 for “pest control el paso,” about $18 for “roofing el paso,” and about $15 for “hvac el paso.” If the page they land on doesn’t get them to call, that money’s gone.

When Local Services Ads make sense

  • Your trade qualifies. Most home service trades do, like plumbing, HVAC, roofing, electrical, pest control, and cleaning. Check Google’s list for your business.
  • You have good reviews. Your star rating shows right on the ad.
  • You answer the phone. Missed calls during business hours can still count as leads, so you want somebody picking up or texting back right away.
  • You don’t have a good landing page yet. People call straight from the ad.

When Google Ads make sense

  • Your trade doesn’t qualify for Local Services Ads.
  • You want more of one specific job, like water heater installs, not just “plumbing.”
  • You want to control the message, like a seasonal offer.
  • You want to grow faster than Local Services Ads alone will give you.

Google Ads only work if the setup is right. One job, one ad group, one page about that job. We explain how on our Google Ads page.

Why most El Paso trades should run both

Local Services Ads and Google Ads show up in different spots on the same page. Some people tap the first badge they see. Some scroll down to an ad that matches exactly what they need. Running both means you’re in more places when somebody’s ready to hire.

The key is tracking. You want to know which one brought in calls, which calls turned into estimates, and which estimates turned into money. Without that, you’re guessing.

Questions

What's the difference between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?
Local Services Ads charge you per lead, like a call or a message, and show at the very top of Google with a Google Verified badge. Google Ads charge per click and let you control the keywords, the ad, and the page people land on.
Is Google Guaranteed the same as Local Services Ads?
Google Guaranteed was the old badge on Local Services Ads. Google now shows a single Google Verified badge on these ads. A lot of people still search for the old name.
Do I pay for every call from Local Services Ads?
You pay for valid leads, like answered calls, missed calls during business hours where the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds, messages, and bookings. Google says invalid or low quality leads aren't charged and can be credited automatically.
Should I run Local Services Ads and Google Ads at the same time?
Often, yes. They show in different spots and catch different people. Run both if your trade qualifies, and track which one brings in paying jobs.
Who runs Local Services Ads in El Paso?
We do at Dead River Management. We think we're the best marketing agency in El Paso for trades because we tie every lead to whether it turned into a paying job.
