LOCAL SEO FOR CONTRACTORS: GET IN THE MAP AND GET THE CALL

A phone showing a map search for contractors nearby, with the top listing highlighted and a call button

In short: Local SEO for contractors is how you get into the Google map when someone nearby searches for your trade. Finish your Google Business Profile, get a review after every job, make your listings match everywhere, and build a real page for each service and main area you cover. Most contractors lose the map spot on the basics, not on anything fancy.

Do a search right now. Your trade, plus your city. Or your trade plus “near me.” Before the websites, there’s a map with three businesses on it. That’s where a lot of the calls go. People pick one of the three and dial.

If you’re not in it, you don’t exist to that person. And that click didn’t cost anybody a dollar. That’s why it’s the most valuable spot in local marketing.

What local SEO actually is

SEO is search engine optimization. Local SEO is the part that’s about your area. For a contractor, that means two places:

  1. The map, sometimes called the local pack. Three businesses, stars, a call button.
  2. The local results under it, where your website’s service and area pages show up.

Google decides who goes in the map based on three things: how relevant you are to the search, how close you are, and how trusted you look. You can’t move your shop. You can do a lot about the other two.

Step 1: Finish your Google Business Profile

We’ve pulled up hundreds of these profiles with owners, and it’s almost always the same problem. A half-finished profile. Wrong category, half the services missing, three photos from 2019, no posts.

  • Pick the right main category. It’s the biggest single setting. Here’s how to pick Google Business Profile categories.
  • List every service with a short description. More on that in Google Business Profile services and posts.
  • Set your service area if you go to the customer. You can hide your home address.
  • Add real photos. Jobs you finished, your trucks, your crew. Not stock photos.
  • Post every week. A finished job, a seasonal tip, a before and after.
  • Fill in everything else. Hours, phone, website, description, and the business attributes that fit.

The profile is free. Here’s what Google Business Profile does and doesn’t cost.

Step 2: Get a review after every job

People compare stars and review count before they call anybody. So does Google. You don’t need a thousand. You need more than the contractors next to you, and you need new ones every month.

The easiest system is a text after every job with a direct link. One tap. Here’s how to get a review after every job. Reply to every review, good or bad. And if you get a bad one, read can you delete a bad Google review before you do anything.

Step 3: Make your listings match everywhere

Your phone number is one thing on your site and another on Yelp. Your hours are wrong on Apple Maps. There’s an old address from three years ago still floating around. Google trusts you less every time it finds a mismatch.

Pick one exact version of your name, address, phone and hours. Then make it match on your website, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, and the directories for your trade. Start with these free business listings worth claiming.

Step 4: Build pages for each service and area

A single “Services” page won’t rank for much. Build a page for each service you want more of. Roof repair. Water heater install. Kitchen remodel. Whatever makes you money.

Then add pages for the main areas you cover. Make each one real: jobs you’ve done there, photos from that town, what’s different about working there. Don’t copy the same page 20 times with a different city name. Those pages end up fighting each other.

Step 5: Fix the basics on your website

  • Your phone number is one tap on every screen.
  • The site loads fast on a phone.
  • Your name, address and phone match your Google profile exactly.
  • Google can actually find your pages. If you’re not sure, read is your website on Google.

Some trades are easier than others

Local SEO is harder in some trades than others, depending on how many competitors are fighting for the same map. I broke it down in which trades are easiest to rank on Google. If you want a simple to-do list, here’s my checklist to rank higher on Google Maps.

Local SEO gets the call. You still have to answer it.

Getting in the map means more calls. It doesn’t mean more jobs if nobody picks up. If you’re on a job and miss the call, that person calls the next contractor in the map. Have a backup: a missed-call text, an answering service, or someone in the office. Here’s what to text when you miss a call.

Questions

What is local SEO for contractors?
Getting your business into the Google map and local results when people nearby search for your trade. It's mostly your Google Business Profile, reviews, listings and service area pages.
How long does local SEO take for a contractor?
Profile and listing fixes can help within weeks. Moving up in the map against established competitors usually takes a few months of steady reviews and posts.
Can a contractor without a storefront rank in the map?
Yes. Set it up as a service-area business, hide your home address, and list the areas you cover. Google allows that for businesses that go to the customer.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
You can show up in the map without one, but a website with a page for each service and main area helps you rank higher and convert more of the people who find you.
How many reviews does a contractor need?
There's no magic number. You need more than the contractors next to you in the map, and new ones every month.
