GENERATIVE ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (GEO): HOW TO GET NAMED IN AI ANSWERS

In short: Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is how you get your business named when somebody asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI who to hire. The AI tools read a handful of sources they trust, pull out the facts, and write an answer. GEO makes sure those sources say clear, matching, specific things about you.
Do me a favor. Open ChatGPT and ask it for the best business in your field in your city. It’ll name three. Maybe four.
Were you one of them?
If not, everybody who asked that question this month never saw you. Not on page two. Not at all. The AI made the shortlist, and you weren’t on it.
What generative engine optimization means
A generative engine is an AI tool that writes an answer instead of handing you a list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and the AI Overviews at the top of Google are all generative engines.
Optimization just means making it easy for them to pick you.
You’ll hear a few names for this. GEO is generative engine optimization. AEO is answer engine optimization. Some people say AI search optimization or LLM optimization. They all mean about the same thing: get named in the answer.
How AI tools decide who to name
These tools don’t rank pages the way Google does. They read a handful of sources, pull out the facts, and write an answer. For most businesses, those sources are:
- Your website
- Your Google Business Profile
- Your reviews
- The directories that list you
- Anything written about you anywhere else, like news, “best of” lists, and forums
If those sources disagree with each other, or say nothing specific, the AI names the competitor who made it easier.
Your hours say one thing on Google and another on your site. Your service page says “quality you can trust” and nothing about price, timeline or who it’s for. There’s no number the AI can quote. So it quotes somebody else.
GEO vs SEO
They’re cousins, not twins.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your page in the results | Get your business named in the answer |
| Where it shows | Google’s blue links and map | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| What wins | Relevant pages, links, reviews | Clear facts, matching details, proof to quote |
| How you measure | Rankings, clicks, calls | Who gets named when you ask |
The good news is most of the work helps both. The AI tools read the same pages Google does. If you’re wondering whether SEO still matters, I wrote is SEO still worth it with AI.
The GEO checklist
None of this is magic. All of it is work.
1. Make your details match everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours, services and service area, identical on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing, Apple Maps and the directories. Boring. Also the first thing that’s wrong at almost every business we look at. Start with free business listings worth claiming.
2. Answer first. Each page should answer the buyer’s question in the first paragraph: what it is, who it’s for, a price range, and how long it takes. Not three paragraphs in.
3. Add structured data. Schema is code that tells search engines and AI tools the facts on a page: your business type, services, FAQs and reviews. Validated, so nothing has to be guessed.
4. Give it proof it can quote. Case studies with real numbers and dates. Reviews with replies. Specific facts. AI tools cite specifics, not slogans.
5. Get mentioned in other places. Local news, industry sites, “best of” lists, and forums where your customers hang out. Here’s how to get on best-of lists for AI search.
6. Keep the reviews coming. Recent, detailed reviews tell AI tools you’re active and trusted. Here’s how to get a review after every job.
How to check where you stand
Once a month, open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and ask the questions your customers ask:
- “Who’s the best [your business type] in [your city]?”
- “Who should I call for [your main service] near me?”
- “Is [your business name] any good?”
Write down who gets named. That’s your GEO scoreboard. If competitors keep showing up and you don’t, look at what’s written about them that isn’t written about you.
What not to do
- Don’t stuff keywords. AI tools read for meaning, not repetition.
- Don’t publish a hundred thin pages. One clear, specific page beats ten vague ones. More on that in AI content and your website.
- Don’t fake reviews or mentions. It’s against the rules, and it falls apart fast.
- Don’t expect overnight results. The fixes are quick. The AI tools catching up takes time.
