AI Search
IS SEO STILL WORTH IT NOW THAT GOOGLE ANSWERS WITH AI?

In short: Yes, SEO is still worth it for a local business, maybe more than before. Google’s AI answers and ChatGPT build their answers from websites, directories, and reviews. If your business isn’t clear and easy to find in those places, the AI has nothing to say about you. What changed is what good SEO looks like, not whether you need it.
Everybody’s asking this right now. When we pulled Google’s results in October 2026, “Is SEO dead now with AI?” showed up in the People Also Ask box for “is SEO still worth it.” So did “Can ChatGPT do SEO?” and “How much should SEO cost for a small business?”
So let’s answer it straight.
What changed
A few years ago, you typed a question into Google and got ten blue links. Now, for a lot of searches, you get an AI answer at the top first. More people are also asking ChatGPT who to call.
That means fewer people click through to websites for simple questions. If somebody asks “how often should I change my AC filter,” the AI just answers it.
But here’s what didn’t change. When somebody needs a plumber, a roofer, or a marketing agency, they still have to pick a business. And the AI has to get its answer from somewhere.
Where AI answers get their information
We checked this ourselves. In October 2026, we pulled Google’s AI answer for “best SEO company El Paso.” The answer pulled mostly from a directory list of El Paso agencies, a “top 5 SEO companies” blog post, and one agency’s El Paso page. It didn’t just make something up. It read pages that clearly answered the question.
That tells you what AI tools want:
- Clear, specific answers on your website that they can quote.
- Other sites that mention you, like directories, lists, and local news.
- Consistent information about your name, address, phone, and services everywhere.
- Reviews, because they show real people picked you.
That’s SEO. It’s the same work, pointed at a new reader.
What SEO looks like for a local business now
Your Google Business Profile comes first. For a lot of service businesses, the map listing brings in more calls than the website. Get the categories right, list every service, and keep the hours current. Our Google Maps checklist walks you through it.
A page for every service and every area. One page that lists twelve services won’t rank for any of them, and it won’t get quoted by AI either. If you do water heaters and drain clearing, each one gets its own page.
Answer the questions your customers ask. Write down what people ask on every call and every estimate. Then answer those questions on your site in plain words. That’s what gets quoted.
Get mentioned. Claim your free listings. Here are the free business listings worth claiming. Get on the local lists in your industry.
Keep getting reviews. Ask after every job. Here’s how to get a review after every job.
We go deeper on the AI side in how to get AI to recommend your business.
What doesn’t work anymore
- Keyword stuffing. Repeating “plumber El Paso” 40 times on a page doesn’t help. It makes the page worse to read, and AI answers skip it.
- Thin pages written for robots. If a page doesn’t actually answer anything, nobody quotes it.
- Ranking for words nobody buys from. Page one for a search nobody uses doesn’t pay a bill.
- Copy-pasting AI content. If your page says the same thing as every other page, there’s no reason to cite yours. Here’s more on AI content and your website.
Can ChatGPT just do it for you?
ChatGPT can help you write. It can help you come up with questions to answer. It can check a page for you.
It can’t claim your Google Business Profile. It can’t earn your reviews. It can’t get the local chamber or a directory to list you. And it doesn’t know your jobs, your customers, or your prices. That’s the stuff that makes you worth recommending.
So where should you put your time?
If you’re a local service business, here’s the order I’d go in:
- Google Business Profile, filled out completely.
- Reviews, every job.
- A page for each service and area.
- Plain answers to real customer questions.
- Listings and mentions on other sites.
And if you need customers this month, don’t wait on SEO. SEO is slow. Good, but slow. Pair it with Google Ads or Facebook Ads so the phone rings while the SEO builds.
