In short: Some trades rank fast on Google. Others are brutal. Here is the honest tier list and the first local SEO move for each goal.

Every trade is not the same on Google. Some owners rank in a few months. Others grind for years and never crack the top three. The difference is mostly the trade, not the effort.

SEO means showing up on Google. Before you spend money on it, know what you’re up against. Then pick the move that fits your goal.

The honest tier list

We rank trades from S down to F. S means easy. F means you need a big budget. Here’s where each one lands.

Decks. S tier. Niche enough to be great for search. Not many deck builders take their website seriously. That leaves room.

Window tint. S tier. Easy. Low competition, clear searches, and most shops have a thin profile.

Concrete. A tier. Very easy. Most concrete companies barely have a website. A decent one stands out fast.

Remodeling. B tier. Winnable if you actually put in the work. There are more players here, but few do the basics well.

Landscaping. B tier. It can get competitive in El Paso. Still very winnable if you keep at it.

Roofing. C tier. Hard but doable. Most roofers are weak online, except a few at the top. Those few are strong, and they make it crowded.

Plumbing. D tier. In a big market, this is about as hard as it gets. The good news is you can still get jobs without being number one.

HVAC. D tier. Same as plumbing. Private equity bought up a lot of HVAC shops, and they spend hard. That made it brutal. There is usually still an angle to win, but it takes a plan.

Lawyers. F tier. You have to spend money to win here. The wins are big when you do, but there’s no cheap path.

What the tier means for you

An S or A trade is the easy spot. A clean Google Business Profile, a real website, and steady reviews can get you ranking. You don’t need a huge budget. You need to do the basics and not quit.

If you’re B or C, the basics still matter. You also need patience. Plan on months, not weeks. The owners who win here keep posting, keep asking for reviews, and keep adding pages.

If you’re D or F, be honest with yourself. You’re not going to out-rank a private equity HVAC company with a Facebook post. You need a real strategy. Often that means ads to cover the gap while the slow stuff builds. And you can still make money at number four or five. Not every call goes to the top spot.

Pick the move by your goal

Your first move depends on your goal. Here are the three goals we hear most. Options go from weakest to best.

Goal one: more calls fast

  • Fix your Maps categories and services. Open your Google Business Profile. Check that your main category is right. Add every service you offer. This is free. If you’re already close to the top, it can move you fast.
  • Get reviews. Better than the first step, but slower. Reviews build trust with Google and with people. Ask every customer right after the job.
  • Run ads. Best if you need calls this week. Just know you’re renting space. The day you stop paying, the calls stop.

Goal two: show up in the next town over

Say you’re in El Paso. You want jobs in Horizon City or Socorro. Google ranks you where your address is, so this is tricky.

  • Business Profile posts that mention the city. Helps a little. It’s cheap, so do it, but don’t expect much.
  • A real page for that city. Good. Build a page on your site about your work in that town. Put actual content on it. Jobs you did there, the neighborhoods, the problems common in that area. Not a copy of your home page with the city swapped.
  • A physical address with its own profile. Best, and obviously the most work. A real location in that city gets you a real Google Business Profile there. That’s the only way to truly rank in Maps for that town.

More people ask AI tools who to call. Here’s what moves the needle.

  • Spamming AI written pages about every topic. Terrible. Don’t do this. It doesn’t help, and it can hurt your whole site.
  • Get on Yelp and Bing. Better. AI tools pull from these more than most owners think. Claim both profiles and fill them out fully.
  • Get mentioned on sites AI already trusts. Best. Local news, trade groups, supplier sites, the chamber. When trusted sites mention you, AI tools pick that up.

Where to start

Figure out your tier first. Then pick your goal. Then do the free stuff before you pay for anything. That’s really it.

Most owners skip the first two steps and jump to spending. That’s how a plumber pays for SEO with no shot at the top. Ads would have paid off sooner.

Questions

Which home service trades are easiest to rank on Google?

Decks, window tint, and concrete are the easiest. They are niche, and most of the competition is weak. Landscaping and remodeling are a step harder but very winnable.

Which trades are the hardest to rank?

Lawyers are the hardest. You have to spend real money to win. Plumbing and HVAC are close behind, mostly because private equity owns so many of the big shops now.

What is the fastest way to get more calls from Google?

Fix your Google Maps categories and services first. It is free and works fast if you are already close. Then get reviews. Ads are faster but you stop getting calls the day you stop paying.
