In short: Most owners now do SEO by asking an AI. They all get the same answer. Here is why that cannot win, and how to use AI the right way.
Most owners I talk to now do their own SEO. SEO means showing up on Google. They do it by asking an AI assistant. That sounds smart. The problem is everyone else is doing the exact same thing.
Everyone gets the same answer
Here is what I keep seeing. An owner asks an AI how to rank. It gives a clean list. Fix the titles. Add service pages. Get reviews. Write a blog post. All of that is fine advice.
The thing is, the plumber down the street asked the same question. So did the roofer. So did the HVAC guy. They all got the same list.
Google only has a few spots at the top. Most people never scroll past them. It is a winner take all market. If everyone does the same thing, nobody wins. The winner cannot take all when there are a hundred winners.
So doing what the AI says is not a plan. It is the baseline.
AI does not know your history
There is a bigger problem. AI does not know your site. It only knows what you type into it.
Say an El Paso roofer bought a thousand cheap backlinks years ago. A backlink is another site linking to yours. Spam links like that can hold a site down for a long time. Google remembers.
That owner asks an AI for help. It tells him to improve his pages. He does it. Maybe things bump up for a week. Then nothing moves.
The AI was not wrong. It just did not know about the thousand spam links. It cannot see what it was never told. So it suggests the right looking things, and the real problem sits there untouched.
Then he calls us because nothing changed.
What actually wins now
Here is the part that matters most. What works on Google today is original insight and real data. Your own numbers. Your own stories. Things nobody else can say.
Generic AI output is the opposite of that. It is the average of what is already online. Google can tell.
You can still use AI
I am not saying stop using it. We use it with our clients. The difference is how.
You have to feed it. Give it your real facts. Your prices. Your service area. What jobs you turned down last month and why. Your Search Console data. Then ask it to organize that into something clear.
You also have to know what to ask. That part comes from experience.
One quick way to get real data to feed it. Open Google Search Console. That is Google’s free report on your site.
- Click Performance.
- Click Search Results.
- Open the get more details report.
- Click the Generative AI tab.
That tab shows how often your pages show up in AI Overviews. Those are the AI answers at the top of Google. That is real data you can feed back in.
Titles and hooks are the worst use
Same thing with content. I have fed AI every title I have ever written. The best it gives back is one I already used. Or something close that sparks a new idea in my head.
I have never used an AI title that worked. It does not know why a title works. It only knows it looks like something that worked before. It is copying the shape without the reason.
Honestly, most people cannot explain why a title works either. But we have a gut feeling. That gut feeling is pattern recognition. It comes from experience. AI has not lived your business. You have.
The takeaway for an El Paso owner
Use AI to organize what you know. Do not use it to replace what you know.
Your experience is the thing nobody else has. Skip your own knowledge and let AI fill in the blanks. You end up with the same site as everyone else. And the same site as everyone else does not rank.

Questions
Can I still use AI for my SEO?
Yes. Feed it your own facts, your numbers, and your site history. Then ask it to organize that. Do not ask it to think for you.
Why does my site not move when I follow AI advice?
AI does not know your history. Old spam links or past penalties can hold a site down for years. The advice looks right, but it misses the real problem.
How do I see if my pages show up in AI Overviews?
Open Google Search Console. Go to Performance, then Search Results, then the get more details report. There is a Generative AI tab.
Based in El Paso. We serve El Paso, Horizon City, Socorro, and Las Cruces, and businesses nationwide.
