HOW MUCH DOES A MARKETING AGENCY COST? HOW AGENCIES ACTUALLY CHARGE

What a marketing agency costs card listing: Monthly retainer; Percent of ad spend; Price per lead; One-time project

In short: A marketing agency’s cost depends on what you need, how much you spend on ads, and how the agency charges. Most use one of four models: a monthly retainer, a percent of your ad spend, a price per lead, or a one-time project fee. Ad spend is almost always separate. The real question isn’t the price. It’s what you get back for it.

When we pulled Google’s results in October 2026, “What is the average cost of a marketing agency?” and “Is it worth it to hire a marketing agency?” both showed up in the People Also Ask box. Google’s own AI answer for “how much does a marketing agency cost” gave monthly ranges starting in the thousands and made a point of saying your ad budget is billed separately.

That last part trips up a lot of owners. So let’s start there.

Ad spend and the agency fee are two different bills

Ad spend is the money that goes to Google, Facebook, or whoever shows the ads. You’re paying for the clicks.

The agency fee is what you pay the people who set up the ads, build the pages, and run it all.

If an agency gives you one number, ask them to split it. You want to know how much is going to the ads and how much is going to them. And make sure the ad accounts are in your name, so you keep them if you leave. Here are more questions to ask after a bad agency.

The four ways agencies charge

Model How it works Watch out for
Monthly retainer A flat fee every month for an agreed list of work. Paying the same whether anything happens or not.
Percent of ad spend The agency takes a cut of what you spend on ads. They make more when you spend more, even if it isn’t working.
Per lead You pay for each lead they send you. Junk leads you still pay for. Ask how they define a lead.
Project fee A one-time price for a website, a setup, or an audit. What happens after the project is done.

A lot of agencies mix these. A retainer plus a percent of ad spend is common. None of them is automatically good or bad. What matters is whether the agency gets paid for results or just for showing up. Here’s how pay per lead compares to a revenue guarantee.

What actually changes the price

  • How many channels. Google Ads only is different from Google Ads, Facebook, SEO, and a website.
  • How much you spend on ads. More budget usually means more work managing it.
  • What’s included. Does it include the landing page? The follow-up? Call tracking? Or is that extra?
  • Who does the work. Some agencies hand you off to a junior account manager after the sale.
  • How many locations or service areas. More areas means more campaigns and more pages.

Questions to ask before you ask for a price

I’ll tell you how I answer the price question, because I think it’s the right way.

Before we go into pricing, we need to make sure we’re a fit for your business. So we go over a couple of things. What’s your average ticket? What’s a customer worth to you over time? How many more jobs can you actually handle?

Here’s why that matters. If your average job is $300 and a customer comes back once, the math is very different than if your average job is $25,000. An agency that quotes you a price before it knows any of that is selling you a package, not a plan.

So before you call any agency, know these numbers:

  1. Your average ticket.
  2. How much a customer is worth to you over time.
  3. How many more jobs a month you could take on.
  4. How much you could spend to get one new customer and still make money.

How to tell if an agency is worth it

An agency is worth it if it brings in more profit than it costs, and you can see it.

Ask for case studies with real numbers. A before, an after, and the dates. Here are ours: Total Auto Repair went from about $20,000 a month to about $100,000 over 18 months. Wicked Logistics, here in El Paso, went from 1 or 2 leads a week to 5 or 6 a day within 3 months, and one lead became a $1.2 million a year contract. Those are their numbers, not a promise of yours.

Then ask what happens if it doesn’t work. If the answer is “we’ll optimize,” you keep paying either way.

Questions

How much does a marketing agency cost?
It depends on what you need, how much you spend on ads, and how the agency charges. Most charge a monthly retainer, a percent of ad spend, a price per lead, or a project fee. Ad spend is almost always separate from the agency fee.
Is ad spend included in the agency fee?
Almost never. The ad money goes to Google or Facebook. The agency fee pays for the people running it. Always ask an agency to show you the two numbers separately.
Is it worth it to hire a marketing agency?
It's worth it when the agency brings in more profit than it costs, and you can see that in customers, not reports. If you can't track which customers came from the marketing, you can't tell if it's worth it.
Why won't Dead River Management give me a price before a call?
Because we need to know if we're a fit first. We look at your average ticket and what a customer is worth to you over time. Then we can tell you whether our offer makes sense for your business.
